A Hydroseed Lawn, Start to Finish

Residential lawn hydroseeding is the most common job we do in Minneapolis. A new house, a teardown and rebuild, a backyard that lost its turf to a sewer replacement or a garage project, or a yard that was never more than weeds and sand: all of them end with bare soil that needs grass. We prepare that soil, spray on a slurry carrying grass seed, wood-fiber mulch, tackifier and fertilizer, and leave you with a watering plan. For most homeowners it is the middle path between paying for sod and spreading seed by hand.

Is your yard a good fit?

Hydroseeding suits a yard where the old turf is gone or not worth saving, the grade is roughly right, and you can water. It is a strong choice when you want a specific mix, such as fine fescue for a shaded lot under big maples, because the University of Minnesota Extension notes most sod grown in the state is Kentucky bluegrass. It is a weaker choice if you need the yard usable next week for a graduation party, or if nobody will be around to water during the first three weeks. In those cases we will tell you sod is the better buy.

Soil comes first

Extension says soil preparation is the same for seed and sod: test the soil, amend it as the test recommends, and firm it slightly with a roller. On a new-construction lot the surface is often compacted subsoil left by the builder's machines, not the dark topsoil that was there before. We loosen it, add topsoil where the layer is thin, rake out rocks and debris, and set a final grade that drains away from the house. Spraying slurry over hard, bare clay loam wastes seed, because the roots have nowhere to go.

Choosing the mix

Extension recommends Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescues, turf-type tall fescue and some perennial ryegrasses for Minnesota lawns. For a sunny yard that gets heavy use, improved bluegrasses with ryegrass or tall fescue hold up best. For shade, fine fescue mixes. For a lawn you want to water and fertilize less, fine fescues or turf-type tall fescue. Many Minneapolis lots need two mixes, one for an open front yard and another for the shaded side yard, and we spray them separately.

Hydroseeding cost for a home lawn

Square footage drives hydroseeding cost more than anything else, with prep work and slope next. On a lawn of 5,000 square feet, HomeGuide's range is about $1,000 to $1,750 and Angi's is $350 to $1,100, and most hydroseeding companies set a minimum job fee, which HomeGuide pegs at $300 to $500 or more. A yard that needs topsoil, fine grading or old turf removal costs more than one that is ready to spray. We measure, look at the prep, and put each piece on its own line.

After we spray

Extension's guidance is to soak new seed in to 4 to 6 inches deep, then water lightly up to 3 or 4 times a day, easing off during rain and once roots take hold. Bluegrass can take 2 to 3 weeks to come up, ryegrass less. HomeGuide puts the first mowing at 4 to 6 weeks. Keep dogs, kids and the mower off it until then. In Minneapolis, the new lawn's first growing season is the one time the city's phosphorus rule allows a phosphorus starter fertilizer without a soil test, so that is what goes into the slurry.

Fall versus spring

The mid-August to mid-September window is the best time to seed in Minnesota, according to Extension. Cooler nights and warm soil favor the grass, and weeds like crabgrass are winding down. If your house closes in May, a spring seeding can work, but expect more watering through June and July and more weeds to pull. If your yard is not ready until late October, we may suggest waiting for spring or covering the soil for winter rather than spraying seed that will not root in time.

Lot types we see

City lots and suburban lots ask for different things. On an older Minneapolis block, the yard may be small and boxed in by a garage, an alley and a boulevard full of tree roots, and the hose has to reach every corner. Around a new suburban house, the area is larger, the soil is usually builder-graded subsoil, and the hard part is volume and prep rather than access. Lake lots add a slope toward the water and the question of where runoff goes. We plan the hose runs, the mix and the prep around the lot in front of us, and we tell you before we start which parts of the yard will be hardest to keep damp in the first weeks. Lawn seeding by any method depends on that early moisture, and hydroseed simply makes it easier to hold.

Residential Lawn Hydroseeding Questions

What is the hydroseeding cost for a typical Minneapolis yard?

Depending on the guide, a lawn of 5,000 square feet runs roughly $350 to $1,750, and companies commonly charge a minimum of $300 to $500 or more per job. Soil prep and topsoil are extra. We give you a figure after measuring.

How long before the grass shows?

Under good conditions hydroseeded grass often shows in 5 to 7 days, but Kentucky bluegrass can take 2 to 3 weeks. Mixes with ryegrass show green sooner while the bluegrass catches up.

Can you seed a lawn in late October?

We usually advise against it. Grass seeded that late has little time to root before the ground freezes. Waiting for spring, or seeding as late as Extension's mid-September window allows, gives better results.

Do I need an irrigation system?

No, but you need a way to water every part of the lawn lightly several times a day for the first weeks. Hoses with timers and sprinklers work. If nobody can water, we will talk about timing or sod.

Will weeds come up in a new hydroseeded lawn?

Some will. Extension notes seeded lawns face more weed pressure than sod. A thick stand of grass and regular mowing crowd most of them out by the end of the first season.
