Grass Under the Trees
Hydroseeding in Minnetonka usually means working around trees. The area was heavily wooded wilderness in the mid-1800s, with thick stands of maple, oak, elm, red cedar and basswood around the first sawmill on Minnehaha Creek. Many of today's neighborhoods kept those trees, which makes for beautiful lots and hard places to grow grass.
Shade and roots
Under a dense canopy, bluegrass struggles. We lean on shade-tolerant fine fescues, test how much light a spot gets and tell you honestly where grass will not hold and a mulch bed makes more sense. Hydro seeding is gentle around shallow roots because it adds no heavy sod rolls, and the spray reaches between trunks that a seeder cannot.
Creeks that flood
Minnetonka has two creeks with a history. Minnehaha Creek powered the early mills, and a grist mill built on Purgatory Creek washed out in a flood shortly after it was built. Yards near either creek can take fast runoff in a storm. We grade swales to carry water around new seed and use erosion control blankets in channels where water concentrates.
Last farms, now houses
Until the 1960s, parts of Minnetonka were still rural, with horse pasture and farms. Those final pieces have since filled in, and the city is now fully developed. Most of our work here is renovation, lawn repair after tree work or utility digs, and new lawns on rebuilt lots.
Fall is the right season under trees
We schedule most overseeding under trees for late summer and early fall. Leaves are still up in August, but by the time seedlings need light in October, the canopy is opening and the soil is still warm.

Minnetonka Questions
Can grass grow under the big oaks in my Minnetonka yard?
In moderate shade, a fine fescue blend usually works. In deep shade we may suggest a mulch bed instead of fighting it.
Will hydroseeding damage tree roots?
No. We spray seed and mulch on top of the soil and avoid heavy grading inside the drip line.
Water rushes through a low spot in my yard during storms. Can you fix that?
We can grade a swale to carry it, line it with an erosion control blanket and seed it so it holds.
When should we overseed a shaded lawn?
Late summer to early fall, when the soil is warm and the canopy starts letting more light through.
