Seeding Blaine's Sandy Ground
Hydroseeding in Blaine starts with sand. While other Anoka County towns grew from farming, Blaine's sandy soil and abundant wetlands discouraged farmers, and the area stayed a hunting ground until after World War II. Sand drains well and warms early in spring, but it holds little water and few nutrients, so a new lawn needs help to get started.
Built by moving sand
Much of modern Blaine was made by sand mining. Developers dug ponds in former peat sod farms and used the sand to raise building sites; Knoll Creek, Club West, Pleasure Creek and the Lakes of Blaine all came out of that grading. That means many yards sit on placed sand over old peat or wetland soil. We check the surface layer and bring in topsoil where it is pure sand.
Glacial history
The Blaine area was covered by a glacier in the late Wisconsinan glaciation, and as it retreated, water pooled into a lake over much of Anoka County. Melting ice chunks left depressions that became the lakes between Lino Lakes and Circle Pines. Low spots in Blaine yards still tend to hold water, and we grade to keep new seed off of them.
Man-made lakes
Sunrise Lake, at 158 acres, and Club West Lake are man-made, and Laddie Lake is Blaine's only natural lake. Ponds with new shorelines need stable banks. On those edges we seed a mix that tolerates wet feet and hold it in place with pinned blankets or bonded fiber matrix.
Watering on sand
On sandy ground the first three weeks decide the lawn. We give you a short watering schedule with more frequent light watering than heavier soil needs, and we use enough hydromulch to hold moisture at the seed.

Blaine Questions
Will a hydroseeded lawn survive in Blaine's sand?
Yes, with topsoil where the surface is pure sand, a good mulch layer and frequent light watering at first.
My house is on a former sod farm. Does that matter?
It can. Placed sand over peat may settle and dry out fast, so we check the surface and plan topsoil and grading.
Can you stabilize the bank of the pond behind my home?
Yes. We shape the bank first, then seed it and protect the seed with a pinned blanket or a layer of bonded fiber matrix.
How often should I water new seed on sandy soil?
More often and lighter than on clay. We give you a written schedule with your estimate.
