Lawns for a Young City

Hydroseeding in Chanhassen keeps pace with one of the more recently developed cities in the region. Chanhassen's population has grown by 123.5 percent since 1990, so a large share of homes, and lawns, are less than 35 years old. When a yard is new, the soil underneath is usually builder fill, and that drives most of our decisions.

Builder fill and compaction

New-home grading tends to leave compacted subsoil with a thin skim of topsoil. Grass planted on that struggles every summer. We loosen compacted areas, spread topsoil where the layer is thin and shape the final grade so runoff drains away from the lot before the hydroseed lawn goes down. Doing this once saves years of patching.

Water on all sides

Chanhassen covers 22.88 square miles, and 2.44 of them are water. Lake Minnewashta, Lake Ann and Rice Marsh Lake, where the first recorded settlers claimed land in 1852, are a few of the basins. For lots that slope toward a lake or marsh, we set silt fence or a sediment log at the low edge and use a tackified hydromulch so the slope holds during the first storms.

Named for the sugar maple

The name Chanhassen comes from the Dakota word for the sugar-maple tree. Many lots still have maples and oaks along the edges. Where shade falls on the lawn, we blend in shade-tolerant fescues and recommend fall overseeding.

Marsh edges

Along marshy ground, standard turf grass does poorly in wet soil. We can hydroseed a wet-tolerant or native mix along those edges and keep the turf on higher ground, which also helps filter runoff before it reaches the water.

Chanhassen Questions

Our house was built in 2015 and the lawn has never done well. Why?

Builder lots often have compacted subsoil and thin topsoil. Loosening the soil, adding topsoil and reseeding usually fixes it.

Can you seed a native buffer along the marsh behind our yard?

Yes. We can spray a wet-tolerant native mix at the marsh edge and turf grass on the higher ground.

Is hydroseed good for a lake lot slope in Chanhassen?

Yes, with sediment control at the bottom and a tackified mulch or blanket on the slope.

How do you handle shade from maples along our lot line?

We use a shade-tolerant fescue blend there and suggest fall overseeding when leaves drop.
