Lawns on Woodbury's Upland
Hydroseeding in Woodbury takes place on upland ground between the valleys of the Mississippi River and the St. Croix River. Water that leaves a Woodbury yard heads one of two ways: west toward the Mississippi through Battle Creek, or east to the St. Croix through Valley Creek. That makes keeping soil on site more than a courtesy.
Valley Creek watershed
The northeast corner of Woodbury drains to Valley Creek, one of the few remaining trout streams in the Twin Cities area. Trout need cold, clear water, and sediment from construction can harm them. On lots in that watershed we put extra care into sediment control: a silt fence installed before any grading, inlet protection on nearby drains and fast cover with hydromulch.
From woods to farm to suburb
When settlers arrived in 1844, the land was mostly wooded, and it was converted to farmland. The first subdivision, Woodbury Heights, broke ground in 1955, and the city has been growing ever since. Former farm ground often has good loam under it, but builders' grading can bury it. We check the surface and add topsoil where needed before seeding.
Small lakes, big rain
Powers, Wilmes, Colby and Carver Lakes sit inside the city, and Battle Creek Lake is the source of Battle Creek. Bare soil near any of them can wash in during a summer storm. For those yards we tighten up the sediment barrier and choose a heavier mulch.

Woodbury Questions
We live in the Valley Creek area. Do we need extra sediment control?
We recommend it. Silt fence before grading and quick mulch cover help keep soil out of a trout stream.
Is the soil on old Woodbury farm fields good for a lawn?
Often, if the topsoil was not buried during grading. We check and add topsoil where the surface is subsoil.
Can you seed both a lawn and a rain garden edge?
Yes. We can hydroseed turf and seed the edges of a rain garden or swale with a mix suited to wetter soil.
Which way does my yard drain?
It depends on the lot. We look at the grade on the site visit and plan the swales and barriers to match.
