From Onion Fields to Front Yards

Hydroseeding in Eagan often happens on ground that grew crops not long ago. Eagan was settled as an Irish farming community and was once called the Onion Capital of the United States. Its largest growth came after Highway 77 was moved and a six-lane bridge was built over the Minnesota River in 1980, and after the last stretch of I-35E was finished in the mid-1980s.

What decades of farming leave behind

Cropland soil is usually fertile, but tillage and heavy equipment can leave a dense layer a few inches down, and site grading for homes buries some of the topsoil. When we prepare an Eagan yard, we break up that compacted layer, add topsoil where the grade cut too deep and fine grade the surface before we spray.

Thirty-year-old lawns

Because so much of the city was built in the 1980s and 1990s, many lawns are now 30 to 40 years old. They show it: thin turf, grubs and bare spots under trees. Overseeding after core aeration is the usual fix, and a full renovation with hydroseed when weeds have taken over.

The Core Greenway

The Eagan Core Greenway project protects sensitive green space around Patrick Eagan Park and a two-mile corridor linking it to Lebanon Hills Regional Park. Yards that back onto greenway land are good places for a native grass edge, which slows runoff and needs little mowing.

River side of the city

The western border follows the south bank of the Minnesota River, and about 2.3 of the city's 33.4 square miles are water. Lots that slope toward ponds or the river valley get silt fence on the low side and fast cover with hydromulch.

Eagan Questions

Our house sits on old farmland. Is the soil good for grass?

Usually the soil is fertile, but it may be compacted. We break up hard layers and add topsoil where grading cut too deep.

Our 1990s lawn is full of thin spots. Overseed or start over?

If the grass is thin but alive, aerate and overseed. If weeds dominate, a renovation and hydroseed is usually better.

We back onto the greenway. Can you plant native grass on the edge?

Yes. We can hydroseed a native strip along the back and turf grass nearer the house.

Does my sloped yard toward a pond need silt fence?

On bare, graded soil draining to a pond, a silt fence or sediment log until the grass fills in is a good idea.
