Seeding Lawns Inside the City Limits

Hydroseeding in Minneapolis is mostly small-lot work: a new lawn behind an infill house, a front yard torn up by a sewer lateral, or a boulevard strip after a utility dig. The city sits on relatively flat terrain above an artesian aquifer, so steep-slope problems are rare here. What we deal with instead is tight access, compacted fill and the short window between the last frost and the first hard freeze.

Flat ground still needs a grade

Flat is not the same as level. On a city lot, a lawn that drains toward the foundation or pools at the alley is a bigger problem than any slope. Before we spray, our grading crew checks fall away from the house, fixes low spots with screened topsoil and, where water has nowhere to go, handles the excavation and trenching for a drain line. Then the hydroseed lawn goes down on a surface that sheds water.

Thirteen lakes and a river

Minneapolis has 13 lakes, four streams and a 12-mile stretch of the Mississippi inside its borders, and about six percent of the city's area is water. Bare soil on a lakeside or creekside lot can wash straight into that water after one summer storm. On those jobs we set silt fence or sediment logs on the low side and use a heavier hydromulch rate so the surface holds until the grass roots.

Timing for zone 5a

The city is in USDA plant hardiness zone 5a with a hot-summer humid continental climate. Cool-season grass seed does best when we spray from late summer into early fall, with spring as the second choice. Midsummer hydro seeding works if the yard can be watered every day, but heat and dry spells make it harder.

Snow and spring melt

The snowiest winter on record dropped 98.6 inches on Minneapolis. A big snowpack melting off a roof and driveway can cut small channels through a young lawn. For fall seeding near downspouts and drive edges, we often add an erosion control blanket strip so the spring melt has somewhere stable to run.

What city jobs usually include

  • Lawn installation after new construction or a teardown
  • Lawn repair after sewer, water or gas trenching
  • Overseeding thin, shaded yards
  • Silt fence and inlet protection on small builder sites

Minneapolis Ground and Climate

  • Terrain. Minneapolis sits above an artesian aquifer on relatively flat terrain, so drainage on a lot depends on careful grading rather than natural slope.
  • Water inside the city. The city has 13 lakes, four streams and a 12-mile segment of the Mississippi River, with water covering about six percent of its 59 square miles.
  • Hardiness zone. Minneapolis is in USDA plant hardiness zone 5a and has a hot-summer humid continental (Dfa) climate.
  • Record snow. The snowiest winter on record, 1983-1984, brought 98.6 inches of snow, which shows how much melt water a yard can see in spring.

Minneapolis Questions

Can you hydroseed a small city backyard with alley access only?

Usually yes. Our hose runs a long way from the truck, so the tank can stay on the street or alley while we spray the yard.

What do you do about water pooling near my foundation before seeding?

We regrade so the soil falls away from the house, add topsoil where needed and, if water still has no outlet, trench in a drain line before we spray.

Is fall really better than spring for a new lawn in Minneapolis?

For cool-season grass, late summer to early fall is usually the stronger window. Spring seeding works too but faces summer heat sooner.

My lot backs onto a lake. Do I need silt fence?

On bare soil that slopes toward water, a silt fence or sediment log on the low side is a sensible step, and it is often required on permitted work.

Can you repair just the strip dug up for my sewer line?

Yes. We fine grade the trench line, add topsoil where it settled and hydroseed the patch so it blends with the lawn.
