One City, Three Soil Settings
Hydroseeding in Bloomington depends on which part of the city you live in. The northeastern part of Bloomington is a sand plain, low hills dominate the west, and the far south lies in the valley of the Minnesota River. Each of those settings asks for a different plan before the hydroseed truck shows up.
Northeast: sandy and fast-draining
On the sand plain, water soaks in quickly and the surface dries quickly too. New seed there needs a solid mulch layer to keep moisture at the seed, and often some added topsoil or compost to help the root zone hold water. Watering is more frequent for the first few weeks.
West: hills and slopes
In the hilly west side, near Hyland Lake Park Reserve and Bush Lake, lots step up and down. Slopes call for erosion control matched to the grade, from tackified hydromulch on gentle ground to straw blankets on the steeper banks. Our grading crew can also cut a swale to steer runoff around a new lawn.
South: the valley edge
The far south drops into the Minnesota River valley, where the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge holds the wetlands. Sediment control matters most along that edge. Silt fence, sediment logs and inlet protection keep construction soil out of ponds and wetlands.
A postwar suburb's lawns
Bloomington grew as a post-World War II housing boom suburb, so a large share of its lawns are decades old. Many have thinned under shade, grubs or years of compaction. Lawn renovation with core aeration and overseeding, or hydroseeding the bare areas, is a big part of the work here.
Ponds everywhere
Beyond the named lakes and Nine Mile Creek, the city has about 100 small lakes and ponds with wetland habitat. If your yard drains to one, we plan the grade and the sediment barriers around it. Get a free estimate or call (612) 285-3572.
Bloomington Landscape Facts
- Land types. Bloomington has three primary land types: a sand plain in the northeast, low hills in the west and the Minnesota River valley in the far south.
- Parkland. About a third of the city is permanently reserved for parks, including Hyland Lake Park Reserve and Minnesota Valley wetlands.
- Small waters. Besides Bush Lake, Normandale Lake and Nine Mile Creek, the city has about 100 small lakes and ponds with wetland habitat.
- Postwar growth. Bloomington was established as a post-World War II housing boom suburb tied to the Minneapolis street grid.

Bloomington Questions
Does sandy soil in east Bloomington change how you hydroseed?
Yes. We use a solid mulch rate, may add topsoil or compost, and set a more frequent watering plan for the first weeks.
Our west Bloomington yard is on a hill. What erosion control do you use?
It depends on the grade: tackified hydromulch on gentle slopes and straw blankets or bonded fiber matrix on steeper banks.
Can you fix a thin 1960s lawn without tearing it all out?
Usually. Core aeration and overseeding, or hydroseeding only the bare spots, often does the job.
My yard drains to a pond. Do I need sediment control during regrading?
It is a good idea. A silt fence or sediment log on the low side keeps loose soil out of the pond until grass covers it.
