Seeding Between the Bluffs and the Creeks

Hydroseeding in Eden Prairie has to account for terrain. The city sits on the north bank of the Minnesota River, and the Minnesota River Bluffs Regional Trail follows the high ground above the valley. Early on, topography worked against the area: the 1853 river town of Hennepin was eclipsed because hauling farm goods out of the valley was hard. Those same grades are what we work around today.

Slopes come first

On a sloped lot, seed alone will move with the first heavy rain. We decide the cover by steepness. Gentle grades get hydromulch with tackifier. Steeper banks get their seed covered by a coat of bonded fiber matrix or a staked-down erosion control blanket. On the steepest cuts, the grading crew may lay the slope back before anything is sprayed.

Creeks running through neighborhoods

Purgatory Creek, Staring Lake, Lake Riley and Round Lake all sit inside the city. Lots that drain toward a creek get silt fence at the bottom of the work area and a check at any swale outlet. Our goal is simple: the soil we grade stays on the lot.

A city full of open space

Eden Prairie has more than 2,250 acres of parks and 1,300 acres of open space. Homes that back onto those areas are good candidates for a native grass or prairie mix on the edges, with a traditional lawn near the house. The native strip needs less mowing and blends with the open space behind it.

Slow growth, then fast

Between 1880 and 1960 the population only went from about 739 to 2,000. Flying Cloud Airport in 1946 was the first sign of big development, and the mid-1970s brought Interstate 494 and Eden Prairie Center. Many yards from the building years that followed are now decades old, and renovation, overseeding and lawn repair are as common as new lawn installation.

Eden Prairie Questions

My walkout lot has a steep side slope. Is hydroseed enough?

Not on its own if the slope is steep. We add bonded fiber matrix or a pinned erosion control blanket and may regrade first.

Can you plant prairie grasses where my yard meets city open space?

Yes. A native mix on the back edge with turf near the house is a common layout, and it blends with the land behind you.

How do you keep soil out of Purgatory Creek during a job?

We put silt fence at the low side of the work area and protect any swale or culvert that drains to the creek.

Our 1980s lawn is thin and patchy. Do we need a full redo?

Often not. Aeration and overseeding, or repairing the worst areas, can bring an older lawn back for less.
