Shoreline Lawns in Prior Lake

Hydroseeding in Prior Lake is often lakeshore work. The city wraps around Upper and Lower Prior Lake, together the largest lake in the south metro, and about 2.9 of its 18.3 square miles are water. When a yard drops toward the water, every grading and seeding decision has to account for what runs off it.

Two lakes and a spillway

Upper Prior Lake (354 acres) drains north into Lower Prior Lake (810 acres) through a navigable channel, and Spring Lake, several feet higher, flows into Upper Prior Lake over a spillway. Sediment from a yard on any of them ends up in the chain. On shoreline jobs we put a sediment barrier at the water side of the work area before the first load of topsoil arrives.

Blue banks

The Dakota name for the lake meant Lake of the Blue Banks. Steep banks along a shoreline are the hardest place to establish grass. We grade them to a stable angle where possible, seed them, and lay a blanket or spray bonded fiber matrix on top so wave splash and runoff do not strip it.

Shoreline buffers

A strip of deeper-rooted native grass along the water traps runoff and holds the bank better than mowed turf. Many lake owners choose a hydroseeded native buffer near the shore and a regular lawn up by the house. We can do both in the same visit.

Commuter growth

Prior Lake grew fast once State Highway 13 was upgraded, which made commuting to the rest of the metro easier. Growth brings new homes and rebuilt lake lots, and each one has graded ground that needs a new lawn.

Prior Lake Questions

How do you seed a steep bank above Prior Lake without it washing out?

Where the bank allows, we cut it back to a stable angle, then seed it and protect it with a blanket or bonded fiber matrix.

Should I plant native grass along my shoreline?

A native buffer roots deeper than turf and traps runoff. Many owners keep lawn near the house and native grass at the water.

We are rebuilding on an old cabin lot. When do we call you?

Call before final grading so we can plan the slope, sediment barriers and topsoil together.

Do you put silt fence on the lake side during grading?

Yes. A sediment barrier on the water side goes in before we bring in soil.
